When you draw or paint something you get to know it intimately. There is great joy in standing out under the sky trying to capture the feeling of standing out under the sky -- you never can, but you can have a great time trying.
There are certain places in the world where all the shapes and forms and colors come together in such harmony that we are attracted to them. When we enter into these places, we feel so natural there that we're sure we've been there before. In Asia they make shrines of such places. In American we make them national parks. Seeing that special potential in every day evirons and finding their spirit by moving paint around on a canvas is what "plein air impressionist" painters strive for. --K.S
Ken has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Utah where he studied under A.L. Gittins, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Hawai'i where he was a Fellow of the East West Center. His travels across the United States, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Islands of the Pacific have yielded numerous plein air paintings and drawings. In the early 1960s, he made his first trip to Europe where he spent a year hitch hiking around Europe -- supporting himself by working at a ski resort in the Bavarian Alps, and by crewing on trans-oceanic yachts, and by painting on the sidewalks of Paris and Munich.
After studying educational film making at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Freiburg, Ken worked in Berkeley, California as an educational film scriptwriter. In New York City, he worked both in front of and behind the cameras ... building sets, driving horse-drawn carriages, and acting in feature films and network television. has also produced many commissioned portraits of animals and their people, and "artist's concept" architectural renderings.
